The standard range for sit-down restaurant service in the United States is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. The 15% figure is the traditional minimum for adequate service. Most etiquette guides now recommend 18% as the baseline and 20% for good service. For exceptional service, 25% is generous and appropriate. For takeout or counter service, 5% to 10% is common.
Enter the total bill amount, set the tip percentage, and enter the number of people in the Number of People field. The calculator divides the total bill including tip by the number of people and shows the exact per-person amount. Each person pays that amount. This method works best when everyone ordered items of roughly equal value or when the group agrees to split evenly regardless of individual orders.
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional because tax is not a service provided by the restaurant. However, tipping on the post-tax total is common and adds only a small amount: on an $80 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the pre-tax amount gives $16, versus $17.28 on the post-tax total. Enter whichever base amount you prefer into the calculator. If your receipt shows the pre-tax subtotal separately, use that for the traditional approach.
Divide your desired flat tip by the bill amount and multiply by 100 to find the equivalent percentage. For example, if your bill is $100 and you want to leave exactly $12, enter 12% as the tip percentage. If your bill is $84 and you want to leave $15, the percentage is 15 / 84 = 17.9%. A tip is voluntary and goes directly to the service staff. A service charge is mandatory and is retained by the restaurant. Many restaurants add an 18% to 22% auto-gratuity for parties of 6 or more. If a service charge appears on your bill, you are not required to add an additional 20% tip. A modest extra tip of 5% to 10% for genuinely exceptional service is appropriate. Double-tipping inflates your total unnecessarily.
