An age calculator determines the exact time elapsed between a person’s date of birth and a target date (usually today). It computes the difference in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds by subtracting the birth date from the target date using calendar-aware date arithmetic that accounts for leap years, varying month lengths, and century leap year rules. The result is displayed both as a structured age (years, months, days) and as totals in each time unit. For example, a person born on 1 January 2000 is 26 years, 5 months, and 11 days old as of 12 June 2026, which is approximately 9,634 total days.
The calculator uses the full Gregorian calendar date-difference algorithm, which correctly handles leap years (years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400). For people born on 29 February, the calculator treats their birthday as 28 February in non-leap years for the purpose of computing full years. The day-level calculation correctly reflects the actual number of days since birth, which includes 29 February in leap years. For example, someone born on 29 February 2000 and calculating age on 28 February 2026 (a non-leap year) shows 25 years, 11 months, 30 days — one day short of their 26th birthday.

Two people with the same chronological age of 50 may have biological ages of 45 and 55 based on their health status. This calculator computes chronological age only. The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar, which is the international civil standard. It works reliably for dates from 15 October 1582 (when the Gregorian calendar was adopted) onward. For genealogical research covering earlier dates, note that different countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times. Great Britain and its colonies adopted it in 1752, at which point 11 days were skipped (2 September was followed by 14 September). For dates after 2099, the calendar mathematics remains valid as the Gregorian system continues, but some applications may have practical date limits.
To calculate age manually, follow these three steps. First, subtract the birth year from the target year to get a preliminary age. Second, check whether the target month-day falls on or after the birth month-day; if it does not, subtract one year from the preliminary age. Third, compute the remaining months by counting from the birth month forward to the target month across year boundaries, then count the remaining days. For example, for a person born on 15 August 1985 calculating age as of 5 January 2026: the preliminary age is 41 years (2026 – 1985), but since January comes before August, subtract 1 to get 40 full years. The remaining months run from August to January, which is 4 months (September through December), and the days run from the 15th to the 5th, which is 21 days. The result is 40 years, 4 months, and 21 days. This calculator automates all three steps including leap year adjustments.
