Choose the direction of the question
Select Required Sample Size to plan a study, or Margin of Error from n to evaluate a sample you already have.
Pick the estimate type
Choose Mean (known σ) if you are estimating an average from a known standard deviation, or Proportion if you are estimating a percentage. The inputs adapt to your choice.
Set the confidence level
Select 90%, 95%, 98%, or 99%. The level fixes the critical Z-value – 1.645, 1.96, 2.326, or 2.576 – shown in the results so the assumption is never hidden.
Enter your precision target or existing sample
For sizing, enter the margin of error plus σ or the expected proportion. For evaluation, enter the sample size you have. Use the input hints to keep percentage points and data units straight.
Add a population size if the group is small
Enter the population when it is finite and meaningful – a 5,000-student university, a 300-person company. Leave it blank for large or unknown populations; the correction applies automatically.
Read the results
The required sample size appears with the unadjusted size, the achieved margin of error at that size, the critical Z-value, and the standard error. The Slovin formula size appears alongside when you entered a population with a proportion estimate.
