- Area – The measure of the extent of a two-dimensional surface, expressed in square units. Area quantifies the space within a boundary and is fundamental to geometry, real estate, construction, land surveying, and agriculture.
- Square metre (m²) – The SI derived unit of area, defined as the area of a square with sides one metre long. It is the standard unit for area measurement in science, international construction, and most real estate markets worldwide.
- Hectare (ha) – A metric unit of area equal to 10,000 square metres (100 m by 100 m). It is the standard unit for land measurement in agriculture and forestry in metric-system countries, equivalent to approximately 2.471 acres.
- Acre (ac) – A unit of area in the imperial and US customary systems equal to 4,046.86 square metres or 43,560 square feet. It originated as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in one day.
- Square foot (ft²) – A unit of area equal to a square measuring one foot on each side. It is the standard unit for residential real estate and interior design in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
- Conversion factor – A numerical multiplier used to express a quantity in one unit as its equivalent in another unit. For area conversions, the factor is always the square of the corresponding linear conversion factor between the same units.
- SI (International System of Units) – The modern metric system of measurement, established by international treaty and defined by physical constants. The SI defines seven base units; the square metre is the coherent derived unit for area.
- Imperial system – A system of units historically used in the British Empire, including feet, yards, acres, and square miles for area. It remains in official use in the United States and partially in the UK and Canada.
- Significant figures – The digits in a measured value that contribute to its precision. When converting area measurements, the result should not have more significant figures than the original measurement to avoid implying false precision.
- Land survey – The scientific process of measuring and mapping land areas, boundaries, and features. Professional surveyors determine parcel areas with high precision for legal property descriptions using specialised equipment.
