A hectare is a unit of area equal to 10,000 square metres (100 m by 100 m). It is roughly 2.47 acres. Hectares are the standard unit for land measurement in countries that use the metric system, including all of Europe, South America, and most of Asia. In agriculture, farmland is typically measured in hectares for crop planning and yield calculations.

There are exactly 43,560 square feet in one acre. This number comes from the historical definition of an acre as one furlong (660 feet) by one chain (66 feet). To convert acres to square feet, multiply the acre value by 43,560. For example, 0.25 acres = 10,890 ft².

Multiply the square metre value by 10.764 to get square feet. For example, 100 m² × 10.764 = 1,076.4 ft². For a quick mental estimate, use 10.8 instead of 10.764: 100 m² ≈ 1,080 ft². This approximation is within 0.3 per cent of the exact value, accurate enough for most real estate comparisons.

A hectare is 10,000 m² while an acre is 4,046.86 m². One hectare equals approximately 2.471 acres. One acre equals about 0.4047 hectares. The hectare is a metric unit defined as a 100-metre square, while the acre comes from the traditional English system based on furlongs and chains. This difference matters in international land transactions where confusing the two can lead to pricing errors of 2.47 times.

Divide the square foot value by 10.764 to get square metres. For example, 1,000 ft² ÷ 10.764 ≈ 92.9 m². For a rough mental estimate, divide by 10.8. The United States uses square feet for buildings and acres for land. The UK uses square feet or square metres depending on the agent. Continental Europe, Australia, and most of Asia use square metres for buildings and hectares for land. India uses square feet for urban apartments and acres or bighas for rural land. One square kilometre equals 0.3861 square miles. To convert, multiply square kilometres by 0.3861 or divide by 2.59. New York City covers about 783 km² (302 mi²), while London covers about 1,572 km² (607 mi²). A square mile is significantly larger than a square kilometre: 1 mi² = 2.59 km².

The US survey acre is based on the US survey foot (1 ft = 1200/3937 m), while the international acre uses the international foot (0.3048 m exactly). The difference is about 0.04 square metres per acre, or roughly 4 square metres per 100 acres. For virtually all practical purposes, the two are interchangeable. The international acre is the standard used by this converter.

One acre equals exactly 4,046.86 square metres (4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet). For quick approximations, remember that 1 acre ≈ 4,047 m². Conversely, 1 m² = 0.0002471 acres, meaning it takes about 4,047 square metres to make one acre. Agricultural land prices are often quoted per acre in the US and per hectare in Europe.

A square metre is about 10.8 times larger than a square foot. Visualising this: a square metre is roughly the area of a standard floor tile (about 3.3 ft by 3.3 ft), while a square foot is about the size of a sheet of letter paper (8.5 by 11 inches).
