Glossary
- Length – One of the seven base quantities in the International System of Units (SI), measuring the distance between two points in space. The metre is the SI base unit of length, defined by the speed of light in a vacuum.
- Metre (m) – The SI base unit of length, defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in exactly 1/299,792,458 of a second. This definition ties the metre to a universal physical constant.
- Kilometre (km) – A unit of length equal to 1,000 metres, used for measuring geographic distances. One kilometre equals approximately 0.621 miles and is the standard unit for road distances in most countries.
- Mile (mi) – A unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems equal to 1,609.344 metres exactly. Miles are used for road distances in the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other countries.
- Foot (ft) – A unit of length equal to 0.3048 metres exactly, used primarily in the United States for construction, aviation altitude, and human height measurements.
- Inch (in) – A unit of length equal to exactly 25.4 millimetres. The inch is used for screen sizes, tool dimensions, and construction materials in countries using the imperial system.
- Conversion factor – A fixed multiplier used to express a quantity in one unit as its equivalent in another unit. Length conversion factors between metric and imperial systems are defined by international agreement since 1959.
- SI (International System of Units) – The modern metric system based on seven fundamental units including the metre for length. SI is the official measurement system for science, medicine, and most countries worldwide.
- Imperial system – A system of units historically used in the British Empire, including inches, feet, yards, and miles for length measurement. It remains in official use in the United States and partially in the UK.
- Significant figures – The meaningful digits in a measured value that indicate its precision. Length conversions should not produce results with more significant figures than the original measurement.
