Roof Pitch Calculator

Measure the rise and the run from the same triangle and divide: pitch as X-in-12 is the rise divided by the run, times 12. In the attic, hold a level against a rafter, measure out 12 inches horizontally, and measure the vertical gap up to the rafter – that gap is the X. A 6-inch gap over the 12-inch level is a 6/12 roof, and the calculator’s pitch mode converts it to degrees, slope percent, and multiplier automatically.

It means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. That is an angle of 26.57 degrees, a 50% slope, and a pitch multiplier of 1.1180 – the most common conventional residential pitch in North America, walkable with care and well inside every shingle warranty range.

The factor that converts a horizontal measurement to its sloped length: the square root of 1 plus the square of the pitch ratio. At 4/12 it is 1.0541, at 6/12 it is 1.1180, and at 12/12 it is 1.4142. Multiplying a rafter’s run or a building’s footprint by the multiplier gives the true sloped rafter length or roof surface area in one step.

The rafter is the hypotenuse of the rise-run triangle: rafter length = the square root of (run squared + rise squared), where the rise is the run times the pitch over 12. For a 24-foot span at 6/12, the run is 12 feet, the rise is 6 feet, and the rafter is the square root of 180, which is 13.42 feet – add the horizontal overhang for the total rafter including the tail.

One hundred square feet of roof area – the trade’s ordering unit. A 30 by 40 house at 6/12 covers 1,341.6 ft² of roof, which is 13.42 squares before waste. Suppliers quote shingle prices per square, and underlayment, ridge cap, and most accessories are ordered by the same unit.

Three bundles of standard 3-tab shingles cover one square; architectural shingles commonly take four because their thicker profile and shorter exposure reduce coverage to about 25 ft² per bundle. The materials mode of this calculator applies the convention for whichever type you select and rounds up to whole bundles – but the coverage printed on the actual bundle label always overrides the estimate.

Standard asphalt shingles are warranted from 2/12 upward; below that, water drains too slowly for the overlapped-tabs system and manufacturers exclude coverage. Low-slope roofs below 2/12 need membrane, standing-seam metal, or built-up roofing. Some manufacturers also require a special underlayment layer in the 2/12 to 4/12 band, so check the installation instructions for your product.

From the attic, press a level against the underside of a rafter, level it, and measure 12 inches along it from the ridge end; the vertical distance from that 12-inch mark up to the rafter is the pitch’s X in X-in-12. Gable ends allow the same measurement from a ladder against the rake fascia. Smartphone apps can estimate the angle from a photo, but the 12-inch level measurement is the method inspectors and insurers trust.

Yes. A 12/12 roof rises 12 inches per 12 inches of run, a ratio of exactly 1:1, and a slope of 1:1 is by definition 45 degrees – a 100% grade with a multiplier of the square root of 2, about 1.4142. It is also the pitch at which most crews stop walking the roof and switch to full staging.

Once. Each roof face covers half the footprint, and the multiplier applied to each face’s share sums to the multiplier applied to the whole footprint – so footprint times multiplier already includes both faces. A 1,200 ft² footprint at 6/12 is 1,341.6 ft² of total roof, not 2,683. Doubling after multiplying is the most common over-estimating error in roof take-offs.

Yes, through the multiplier. A steeper roof exposes more surface over the same footprint: at 4/12 a 1,200 ft² house needs 1,265 ft² of shingle coverage, at 6/12 it needs 1,342, and at 10/12 it needs 1,562 – before waste. The materials mode computes the correct area for the pitch you select so the bundle order tracks the actual geometry.

Ten percent for a simple gable with few openings is the customary allowance, rising toward fifteen on roofs with valleys, dormers, or hips, where cuts and caps consume more. Starter courses along the eaves and ridge or hip cap also draw from the order. The calculator shows the roof area both before and after waste so the charge is visible rather than buried.

Span is the full wall-to-wall width the roof covers; run is half of that on a symmetric gable – the horizontal distance from wall plate to ridge; and rafter length is the sloped hypotenuse from plate to ridge along the roof itself. The run and rise give the rafter through the right-triangle formula, and adding the horizontal overhang gives the total rafter including the tail that forms the eave.

It handles gable and shed geometries directly – the two cases that dominate residential construction. For hip roofs, estimators commonly step the footprint one pitch increment higher as an allowance for the hip ridges, or estimate each face at its own pitch and sum section by section. Valleys, dormers, and intersecting wings are the same principle: compute each face’s area at its own multiplier, then add the waste factor to the total.
