Glossary
- Hydration – The process of maintaining adequate water balance in the body to support physiological functions. Proper hydration is essential for temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and waste elimination.
- Dehydration – A condition resulting from excessive loss of body water, causing symptoms including thirst, headache, fatigue, and impaired cognitive function. Severe dehydration requires medical attention.
- Electrolytes – Minerals in body fluids that carry electrical charge, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Electrolyte balance is critical for nerve function, muscle contraction, and fluid regulation.
- Total body water – The total amount of water in the human body, constituting approximately 50-60% of body weight. TBW varies with age, sex, and body composition, with muscle tissue holding more water than fat.
- Urine colour chart – A visual tool for assessing hydration status by comparing urine colour to standardised shades. Pale yellow indicates adequate hydration; dark amber suggests dehydration.
- Daily reference intake – The recommended amount of total water from all sources (beverages and food) established by health authorities. For adults, this is approximately 2.0-3.0 L per day depending on age and sex.
- Sweat rate – The volume of fluid lost through perspiration during physical activity, typically 0.5-2.0 L per hour. Sweat rate varies with exercise intensity, temperature, humidity, and individual physiology.
- Thirst mechanism – The body's physiological signal to consume water, triggered by increased blood osmolality. By the time thirst is felt, mild dehydration (1-2% body weight loss) may already be present.
- Overhydration – A condition of excess body water that dilutes blood sodium levels, also called hyponatremia. Overhydration is rare but can be dangerous, particularly during endurance exercise with excessive water intake.
- Fluid balance – The equilibrium between water intake and water loss in the body, regulated by the kidneys, hormones, and thirst mechanism. Maintaining fluid balance is essential for homeostasis and overall health.
